Sclerotherapy Q & A

What are spider and varicose veins?

Your veins are the blood vessels in your body that return blood back to your heart and lungs for reoxygenation. To help push the blood back to your heart, your veins are lined with special valves that open to help move your blood forward and then close to prevent blood from moving backward.

Spider and varicose veins are visible surface veins that develop due to changes in the structure or function of the vein or valve.

Spider veins

Spider veins are small visible veins that appear in clusters and look like a spider web. These veins may be red, blue, or purple. Though you can develop spider veins anywhere on your body, they most often appear on the face and legs.

Varicose veins

Varicose veins are large visible veins that create a road map of blue or purple raised bumps under your skin. Like spider veins, varicose veins may appear anywhere on your body, but they most often affect the legs.

What is sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a treatment Dr. Hager offers to get rid of spider and varicose veins. During sclerotherapy, he injects a special chemical called sclerosant into the visible vein. This causes the vein to collapse and disappear over time.

Dr. Hager offers ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy.

Am I a good candidate for sclerotherapy?

When you come in to see Dr. Hager with concerns about spider or varicose veins, he conducts a thorough evaluation to determine the most effective treatment for you.

He may consider you a good candidate for sclerotherapy if you dislike the look of your spider veins and small varicose veins or the visible veins affect normal blood circulation.

What can I expect during sclerotherapy?

Dr. Hager takes a patient-centered approach to care and creates customized treatment plans specific to your needs. He reviews what you can expect during sclerotherapy at your consultation.

During your in-office treatment, Dr. Hager uses a tiny needle to inject the medication that destroys the lining of your vein. He uses ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy to ensure the accuracy of your injection. Sclerotherapy causes minimal discomfort.

Depending on the size of the vein undergoing treatment, Dr. Hager may recommend several sclerotherapy treatments to get the best results. In most cases, patients resume their usual activities after their session.

Spider and varicose veins don’t improve over time. To get rid of your visible veins, call Hager Advanced Vein Care or request an appointment online today.
